Commonly Asked Questions
An Independent Educational Evaluation, or IEE, is like a personalized compass for your child’s educational journey. It is a comprehensive assessment conducted by an unbiased and expert team, not affiliated with your school district.
This evaluation helps you understand your child’s unique learning profile, their strengths, and areas where they may need extra support. It is an essential tool to make sure your child receives the education and services they truly deserve.
At Mindful Neuron, we are here to guide you through this process, ensuring that the path to educational success is one filled with understanding and empowerment.
Costs are typically covered by the school district, and this is often the case when the district has conducted an initial evaluation that parents have concerns about or disagree with.
Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), parents have the right to request an IEE at public expense if they disagree with the district’s evaluation.
Requesting an IEE may be a challenging process. However, it can ensure your child’s educational needs are thoroughly assessed.

Here are some steps how to request a Second Opinion IEE for your child:
1. Express Your Concerns: Start by discussing your concerns about your child’s education with your child’s school to begin an initial evaluation. This is an essential first step. The school district must have completed an IEE through the school before a second opinion evaluation can be requested.
2. Request the IEE: If you have concerns about the evaluation or assessment conducted by the school district, you may submit a written request for a Second Opinion IEE at your child’s school. It’s crucial to specify the areas of evaluation you’d like your child to be assessed.
3. District Response: Upon receiving your request, the school district has two options: they can agree to provide the IEE, or they can file a due process complaint to defend their evaluation. If they agree, they will provide you with a list of qualified professionals to conduct the IEE.
4. Choose an Evaluator: You have the right to choose an evaluator from the list provided by the school district. Ensure that the chosen evaluator is independent and not affiliated with the school district. If the evaluator you want is not on the list, you may request them by informing your school contact, such as principal secretary, special education coordinator, or case carrier.
